Armatage is a quiet neighborhood of Minneapolis on the city’s border with Edina. In naming it Minneapolis’ best neighborhood in 2012, City Pages claimed it is one of the city’s unsung hotspots for foodies, families and fitness, providing something for everyone.

Located in the southwest corner of the city, Armatage neighborhood is bounded on the north by 54th Street West, on the east by Logan Avenue South, and on the south and west by the city limits at Highway 62 and Xerxes Avenue South.

Originally part of Richfield, the area was annexed to Minneapolis in the mid-1920s. The neighborhood grew around the school named for Maude Armatage, a distinguished community leader.

The neighborhood park, Armatage Park, boasts beautiful mature shade trees, tennis courts, ball fields, kids play equipment, a wading pool and community center. Residents love that they are within walking distance of both Lake Harriet and Minnehaha Creek. It’s the kind of neighborhood where kids can head to the park by themselves, bike around the block, and play outside in the front yard.

Armatage is built up with mostly single-family housing and some multi-family buildings. Most were constructed between 1949 and 1969. Get the same benefits of the more expensive neighborhoods to the north at a more reasonable price point. The population of Armatage is primarily middle-class families and empty-nesters who appreciate its easy access to downtown, Southdale and the airport.

For the food lover, Cave Vin along Xerses is one of the best kept secrets in the city. At this family-owned restaurant, you’ll feel like family, too. Food Network star Guy Fieri swung by Pizzeria Lola along Xerses to appreciate its woodfire pies with Korean flair on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The neighborhood’s largest retail area along Penn Ave. S. is also home to several restaurants, including Book Club, which is operating in the former Cafe Maude location along Penn. The Red Wagon Pizza Company serves up happiness with inventive New American thin-crust pies and a long tap list of craft beers. The popular pizza parlor started as a food truck, inspired by Chef-Owner Peter Campbell’s family pasttime of making pizzas. This retail hub is also home to the 50-year-old Settergren Hardware, a bakery, massage therapist, barber, dentist and more. Near Highway 62 is one of the city’s largest greenhouses, Wagner’s Garden Center, which has been in the same location for 100 years.

Kristen Sekenski’s home-based business, See Kitty Sew, offers weekly classes. Kids and adults sew whatever they’re interested in, including tote bags, personalized pencil cases, bibs for little cousins, throw pillows, quilts and even a Jeep cover.

This is a neighborhood where you’ll find foodies, hipsters, young professionals, and college students rubbing shoulders with each other. Buy a home in Armatage and you’ll get suburban living with an urban appeal.
